What margin and leverage actually are
Margin is the money you put down as collateral. Leverage is the multiple by which your total position size exceeds that collateral. If you deposit $1,000 as margin and open a $10,000 Bitcoin position, you are using 10x leverage — your own money is 10% of the position, and the rest is effectively borrowed exposure.
Leverage is usually written as a ratio (2x, 10x, 100x) or as a margin percentage (50%, 10%, 1%). They describe the same thing from opposite directions: higher leverage means a smaller cushion of your own money standing between you and a loss.
Why it amplifies gains AND losses equally
The core fact people skip: leverage multiplies the percentage move of the asset by the leverage factor, in both directions. At 10x, a 1% rise in Bitcoin turns into roughly a 10% gain on your margin — and a 1% fall turns into roughly a 10% loss. There is no version of leverage that magnifies the upside more than the downside.
This is why framing leverage as a way to 'boost returns' is misleading. It boosts variance. A position that would have been a modest, survivable loss unleveraged can become a total loss of your margin when multiplied.
Liquidation: the risk unleveraged holding doesn't have
When you hold Bitcoin outright, a price drop is a paper loss you can wait out. With margin, if the price moves against you far enough that your collateral can no longer cover the position, the platform force-closes it. This is liquidation, and it converts a temporary drawdown into a permanent, realized loss.
The higher the leverage, the smaller the move needed to liquidate you. At very high leverage, a routine intraday wick — the kind of volatility Bitcoin produces regularly — can wipe out the entire margin. You can be 'right' about direction over a week and still be liquidated by noise on Tuesday.
The hidden costs that erode leveraged positions
Leverage is rarely free. Margin positions typically carry borrowing or funding costs, and perpetual futures charge periodic funding payments between long and short traders. These accrue whether or not the price moves in your favor, so time itself works against a leveraged position.
There is also slippage and the mechanics of forced closing: liquidations often happen at worse prices than the trader expects, and cascades of liquidations can accelerate the very move that triggered them. These frictions are part of why leveraged trading is structurally harder than it looks.
What the honest evidence says
Leverage does not improve anyone's ability to predict prices; it only enlarges the consequences of being wrong. Broadly, studies of retail derivatives and CFD traders have repeatedly found that the majority lose money over time, and higher leverage is associated with faster, larger losses — not better outcomes.
Trading is high-risk in general, and leverage sits at the extreme end of that spectrum. It is best understood as a magnifier of an edge you would need to already possess, applied to an asset (Bitcoin) whose volatility makes the magnification unforgiving.
