QT in plain terms: the reverse of QE
Under quantitative easing (QE), a central bank creates new reserves and uses them to buy government bonds and sometimes other assets. This expands its balance sheet and adds liquidity, aiming to lower longer-term interest rates and ease financial conditions. Quantitative tightening runs the tape backwards: the balance sheet is allowed to contract, and the reserves created during QE are gradually extinguished.
The key idea is the size of the balance sheet, not just the price of money. QE and QT change how many assets the central bank holds and how many reserves circulate in the banking system. That makes QT a quantity tool, working through the supply of liquidity, which is different from setting a short-term policy interest rate.
How central banks actually drain liquidity
There are two broad methods. The most common is passive runoff, sometimes called roll-off: when bonds the central bank holds mature, it simply does not reinvest all of the proceeds. The balance sheet shrinks on its own as securities expire, often subject to a monthly cap that limits how fast this happens. The second method is active sales, where the central bank sells bonds into the market before they mature. Active sales are less common and can be more disruptive to prices, so many central banks have leaned on passive runoff.
As assets roll off, the reserves that commercial banks hold at the central bank tend to fall, and cash is effectively withdrawn from the system. How quickly this bites depends on other moving parts — government cash balances, money-market facilities, and demand for reserves — which is why the pace and impact of QT are watched closely and can be hard to predict precisely.
QT is not the same as raising rates
It is easy to blur QT and interest-rate hikes together because central banks have often done both at once. They are separate levers. Rate policy sets the price of short-term borrowing; QT changes the quantity of assets on the balance sheet and the volume of reserves in the system.
A central bank can, in principle, hold rates steady while continuing QT, or pause QT while adjusting rates. Because the two tools can move on different schedules and at different speeds, the overall stance of policy is a combination of both — one reason financial conditions do not always line up neatly with the headline policy rate.
How QT has related to risk assets — a tendency, not a law
The intuition many market participants hold is straightforward: when liquidity expands, risk assets such as equities, high-yield credit, and Bitcoin have often traded with a tailwind; when liquidity is drained, that support is removed and conditions can turn more challenging. Historically, easier-liquidity phases have frequently coincided with stronger risk appetite, and tightening phases with more caution or volatility.
The important caveat is that this is a broad tendency observed over a limited period, not a mechanical rule. QT episodes have not produced identical outcomes — markets have at times risen during tightening and fallen during easing, because many other forces are at work: earnings, growth, inflation, positioning, regulation, and shifting sentiment. Correlation over a short history is not causation, and any single relationship can weaken or reverse.
Bitcoin and the global-liquidity lens
Bitcoin has no cash flows or central authority, so some observers treat it as a sensitive gauge of global liquidity — potentially responsive to shifts in reserves and financial conditions. That framing is a hypothesis about tendencies, not an established law, and Bitcoin's short trading history makes any such relationship provisional.

For that reason, treating QT as a single dial that reliably turns risk assets up or down oversimplifies. It is better understood as one meaningful current within a larger flow.
