How these numbers are made

The US-dollar price is the last trade on Bitstamp’s BTC/USD order book — a price at which Bitcoin actually changed hands, not a blended index. Every other row multiplies that trade by the ECB reference rate for the currency. Reference rates are published once each business day, so the FX side moves daily while the Bitcoin side moves constantly.

A converted price is a reference, not a quote you could trade at: a real BTC/EUR order book would differ by its own spread and liquidity. Serious desks know the difference — and now you do too.

How much is one Bitcoin right now?

The live number at the top of this page is the last price at which one Bitcoin actually traded against the US dollar on a real exchange order book. It refreshes about once a minute. There is no official Bitcoin price — every venue trades its own — but a real last trade is the most honest single answer.

What is the Bitcoin price today in USD?

BTC/USD is the reference pair for the whole market, and it is the first row of the table above. The dollar market is Bitcoin’s deepest and most liquid, which is why prices in other currencies are usually conversions from it.

Why is the Bitcoin price usually quoted in US dollars?

Because the deepest order books trade against the dollar. Prices in euros, yen or any other currency on this page are that USD trade converted at the European Central Bank’s official reference rate — honest as a reference, but not a quote you could trade at.

Is the Bitcoin price the same on every exchange?

No. Every exchange runs its own order book, so prices differ slightly; arbitrage usually keeps the gap to fractions of a percent. That is also why you should compare a Bitcoin price only against history from the same source.

Is there a “Bitcoin stock price”?

No — Bitcoin is not a stock. There is no company, no shares and no earnings behind it; the phrase almost always just means the Bitcoin price shown here. Listed products like spot ETFs or Bitcoin-holding companies track the Bitcoin price in different ways, with their own fees and risks.
